For 33 years, the Baldwin County Library Cooperative has brought high quality library service to residents who have not had ready access to a library. The first bookmobile started its travels in the summer of 1970 with about 500 books on board. Today, the bookmobile makes 37 stops every two weeks at communities, senior centers, day care centers and schools. We have over 3,000 items shelved on the bookmobile, including books, books on tape, and videos. In addition, bookmobile patrons may request materials from the nearly 300,000 items available through the county-wide circulation system.
The bookmobile program is managed using the same criteria as other library programs. Bookmobile service in Baldwin County is based on factors such as demographics, growth and use patterns, levels of need and public demand. Planning is done cooperatively with local planning agencies, schools, retirement centers and other nonprofit agencies whose clientele may benefit from bookmobile services. Provision of bookmobile service is based on the determination that it is the most effective method of delivering library service to the communities or organizations selected.
